How to Wrap DustJackets

Hints from Bella Luna Books
on using
mylar dust jacket protectors

Place the mylar protector on a flat surface, mylar side down in a location from which you can see the TV.  Dont watch anything you have to concentrate on, we want your mind on the books, the TV is just a mindless distraction.

Slide the dust jacket between the mylar and the paper protector with the pictorial side down.

Slide the dust jacket firmly up to the top of the protector. It is critical to get the jacket all the way up as far as it will go and moistening your fingertips may help you get the necessary gription  (thanks to a four year old Tim for this most descriptive term.)

The most important step is to hold the dust jacket in place with firm pressure while moving your fingers down to the perforations.  Let your fingers walk down without letting the dust jacket move. This may seem frustrating to coordinate until you get the hang of it, but be patient and listen to your biofeedback and you will get it.

Fold the paper protector up at one of the perforations or make your own fold if necessary.  It is much preferable to make the paper shorter than the dust jacket longer.  It looks really dorky if your book has a white rim either at the top or the bottom of the dust jacket.  You spent way too much money on your books to have a dorky looking collection.

Now fold the plastic up and over the paper crease it with your fingernail or other firm object along the paper fold.  If you make this crease definitive, there is no need to remove the paper sticker covering the adhesive intended to make up for a loose fold.

Fold the left flap over using the crease on the dust jacket as a guide and make sure the edges are square.  When you are sure you have the edge lined up you can use the same fingernail (or reasonable facsimile) to crease the mylar along the dust jacket fold.

Lay the book in the protector and slip the front boards into the fold you just created.  Close the front of the book and fold the rear flap over the rear boards and crease it with your fingertips. Voila!

After a while you will actually be good enough at this to watch the aforementioned television while you cover your books.  But as soon as you are done it is very important to turn off the tube and go READ A BOOK!
